In the Middle School students have many opportunities to participate in sports, such as cross-country, basketball, soccer, track and field, wrestling, and lacrosse. Some of these teams may be at the sandlot level, some at middle school level, and some at junior varsity level. Before a student may begin practicing for any sport the proper physical examination form (available at wwww.vhsl.org) must be completed and submitted to the Athletic Director along with the proper fee. The program of athletic activities is coordinated by the Athletic Director who works with the coaches, managers, and student athletes to develop individual athletic abilities, team competitiveness, and school spirit. All student athletes, parents, and coaches will be issued an Athletic Handbook that outlines the policies and procedures of the athletic program. A signed Athletic Agreement and signed Parental Acknowledgment must be on file before students may participate in an athletic activity.
These guidelines apply to students in grades 6 and 7. Activities governed by these guidelines include student government offices and middle and junior varsity sports. Students become ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities if they fail any subject.
Students become ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities if they fail any subject. The period of ineligibility begins on the day that report cards are issued. A student may regain eligibility at the mid-point of the quarter provided that the student has earned a minimum of a 77 for the current quarter in the subject(s) that the student had previously failed and that no other grades have fallen below a 70 for the current quarter. Mid-point eligibility is regained on the day that the interim reports are issued. Otherwise, eligibility may be regained on the day that report cards for the next quarter are issued. Eligibility at the beginning of a school year requires a final passing grade in each course taken during the previous year.
All athletes are expected to be at school and on time and have good attendance records. See Athletic Handbook.
Participation in varsity and junior varsity sports by students at Roanoke Catholic School is governed by the eligibility rules of theDiocese of Richmond, the Virginia High School League (VHSL), the Virginia Independent Conference (VIC), the Blue Ridge Conference (BRC), and the Virginia Catholic High School League (VCHSL). Students should remember that, according to VHSL regulations, they have four years to participate in interscholastic sports, beginning when they start ninth grade.

All athletes are expected to be at school on time and have good attendance records. Students must be present in school for a minimum of four classes in order to participate in athletics on any given day. If athletes are too sick to be in school, then they are too sick to participate in sports. This applies to both practices and games.
An athlete may be excused during a game day if he/she has a doctor’s or dentist’s appointment. An athlete may be excused for a non-medical reason if he/she has obtained prior approval from the administration or athletic director. After a game, athletes returning late to school will not be excused for tardiness or from assignments or tests scheduled for the next day.
An athlete will contact his/her teachers at the beginning of the sports season to determine procedure for requesting assignments in advance of an absence due to athletic involvement.
Please read the very important information regarding head injury and concussion. One copy of the “Concussion Information Sheet” must be signed by both the student and parent. For very young students, parents may explain the information in an age appropriate manner and sign for the young child. These forms are required of every student, whether or not the student plans to participate in a sports program this year. Please send in one form per student as soon as possible.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has enacted COV 22.1-275.5:” Policies on concussions in student-athletes.” We are therefore legally obligated to require your signature to acknowledge receipt of this information. We will not permit a student-athlete to participate in practice or games without the signed form. Due to the fact that accidents and concussions may occur at any time during the school day or at home, we are extending the obligation to all parents to please read and be aware of the symptoms and potentially serious consequences of head injury and concussion.
Thank you for your anticipated efforts to protect the welfare of our precious children.
